Automattic Announces Workforce Reduction Amid Strategic Restructuring

Automattic lays off employees

Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, Tumblr, and WooCommerce, has announced a significant restructuring, which will result in a 16% reduction of its global workforce. This decision affects approximately 280 employees across 90 countries.

In an official statement, CEO Matt Mullenweg emphasized the need for the company to adapt to a rapidly evolving technological landscape and intensifying market competition. He stated that, despite revenue growth, enhancing productivity and profitability is essential to support ongoing innovation and customer service. The restructuring aims to make Automattic more agile, eliminate inefficiencies, and focus on delivering high-quality products.

Automattic has committed to supporting those impacted by the layoffs through severance packages, retention of company laptops, and job placement resources. Mullenweg expressed gratitude for their contributions and assured that the company is dedicated to assisting them during this transition.

This move follows a period of internal challenges for Automattic, including a legal dispute with WP Engine over trademark issues, which previously led to staff reductions. Despite these challenges, Mullenweg remains optimistic about Automattic’s future, highlighting the company’s portfolio of products with global potential and reaffirming its mission to democratize the internet.
