ElevenLabs has officially entered the AI music race with the launch of a new music generation app, expanding beyond its core voice technology into full song creation.
The new platform allows users to generate complete music tracks using AI, including vocals, instrumentals, and different moods. It also introduces features such as curated playlists, live stations, and daily mixes like Focus, Energy, and Chill, positioning it closer to a streaming and discovery platform rather than just a creation tool.
Entering a Market Already Taking Shape
ElevenLabs is not entering an empty space.
AI music generation has already seen rapid growth over the past two years, with platforms like Suno and Udio leading the category. These tools allow users to create full songs from simple prompts, often including realistic vocals and structured compositions.
Suno, for example, has become widely known for generating complete songs with vocals and instrumentation from text inputs, effectively acting as a full AI-powered music studio.
Udio, on the other hand, has positioned itself more toward producers, offering deeper control over tracks and editing capabilities.
However, the space has not been without controversy. Both Suno and Udio have faced legal scrutiny over how their models were trained, particularly around the use of copyrighted music, forcing the industry to confront licensing and ownership questions early.
A Strategic Shift for ElevenLabs
ElevenLabs’ move into music is a natural extension of its audio expertise.
The company built its reputation on highly realistic AI voice generation. Expanding into music allows it to own a larger portion of the creative pipeline, from speech to full audio production.
Earlier efforts from the company already hinted at this direction, including partnerships with music rights organizations to ensure licensed training data, a move that could help it avoid some of the legal challenges seen by competitors.
Comes as AI Platforms Recalibrate
The launch also comes at a time when parts of the generative AI space are being reshaped.
Just days earlier, OpenAI confirmed it is shutting down its Sora video app, a TikTok-like platform that had launched only months before.
Reports suggest the shutdown reflects a broader shift toward enterprise-focused AI products rather than consumer-facing creative platforms.
In that context, ElevenLabs’ move in the opposite direction is notable. While some players are pulling back from experimental consumer apps, others are doubling down on creative tools and platforms.
